My Bad Redline Recovery Experience

I had a bad experience with Redline Recovery. They trashed my credit report and my life turned upside down almost overnight.

Bad credit can be a serious problem. With a low credit score, you will be unable to get new financing for a car, a house, or any other sort of loan. The biggest problem with having bad credit is that it presents a negative picture of you to the world.

Anyone who runs a credit report on you–including potential employers, landlords, etc–will see your low credit score and begin to make assumptions about you. They might think you are an irresponsible person who is incapable of managing money or holding up your end of a business agreement. Having these assumptions made about you can be extremely embarrassing and even demoralizing.

I experienced the embarrassment of bad credit first hand a little while ago. The situation was made even worse because I knew that some of the items that were dragging down my credit score were simply not true! I hated being judged negatively based on some “mistakes” that my debt collector had made when reporting my debts to the credit bureaus.

My problems began when my husband and I suddenly found ourselves out of work. After nearly a decade of service, we were both laid off from our jobs. I guess that’s one of the reasons married couples should never work at the same company–too much risk of things like that happening!

Once we lost our income, we had to live off of our savings while we searched for new jobs. My husband was able to find odd jobs from time to time, which helped us stay afloat. However, we never seemed to have enough cash to make all of our creditors happy. I had to make some tough decisions about which bills to pay and which ones to let slide.

I was always careful to pay a little bit on my Charter One Bank loan whenever I could. Of course I hardly ever made the minimum payment, but I was trying. I thought the bank would notice that and maybe cut me a little slack. Unfortunately, the bank was completely indifferent to my circumstances. Instead of working with me, they slapped me with multiple fees each month. I really couldn’t understand their logic. If they wanted me to be able to pay off the loan, they needed to give me time to get back on my feet and find a new job. Otherwise, there simply wouldn’t be any money available for them to collect.

I have to admit that I got annoyed with all the fees, and I just quit paying Charter One Bank. I got kind of personal about it, and figured if they didn’t appreciate the small amount of money I was able to give them, I wasn’t going to give them anything at all! Of course, this was completely illogical. The bank wasn’t being purposefully cruel or ungrateful to me. It was just business to them.

As time passed and I still didn’t make any payments, Charter One Bank sold my defaulted loan to a debt collection company called Redline Recovery. Redline Recovery was extremely aggressive in trying to secure repayment on the loan.

At first I tried explaining to the Redline rep that I simply didn’t have the money right then. That didn’t seem to sink in. They kept calling and calling, even though nothing about my situation had changed, and I still had no way of paying them. It got to the point where Redline Recovery would call me every day, and they sent a letter about once a week.

Credit Drop Redline Recovery

Redline Recovery brought my credit score down to a 501. I could not get a loan from the bank for a car, or a mortgage, it was chaos.

My husband also had some bad debts at this time, so I was also fielding calls from his debt collectors! It was a pretty miserable situation. I felt like I could hardly answer the phone for fear of being chewed out by a debt collector from one company or another.

To make matters worse, Redline Recovery started reporting my debt to the credit bureaus. I got letters in the mail from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion, noting that I now had a collection item on my credit report. That upset me a lot, because I knew my credit score was going to take a big hit because of this collection item. I checked my credit score, and sure enough, it had dropped to 588 points. I felt like I’d hit rock bottom at that moment.

However, things actually got worse! I got a second notice from the credit bureaus, showing that I now had TWO collection items from Redline Recovery on my report. That really confused me, because Redline had only ever spoken to me about the Charter One Bank loan. As far as I knew, that was the only debt they were trying to collect from me.

I tried to discuss the extra collection item with Redline Recovery, but they were less than helpful. Invariably, the representative I talked to first would have no idea what I was referring to, and I’d have to wait on hold while they tried to find someone to help me. It was frustrating, to say the least.

Since I wasn’t having any luck dealing with Redline Recovery on my own, I decided I needed professional help. It was a tough decision, because I really didn’t want to spend the money to hire a professional. However, I recognized that repairing my credit was an investment in my future, and something I absolutely needed to do in order to get back on my feet. I can’t prove it, but I suspect I lost out on more than a few job opportunities because of my bad credit score.

The Lexington Law rep zeroed in on the duplicate collection item as the keystone of my case against Redline Recovery.
